THE 11 PRACTICAL BRIEFING GUIDES ARE NOW AVAILABLE

Equality Commission for Northern Ireland

Skill NI is proud to be working in partnership with the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland in the development of the SENDO Code of Practice for further and higher education.

The Code of Practice for Further and Higher Education is now available to download from the Equality Commission's website. A hard copy of the Code and copies in alternative formats are available by contacting the Equality Commission.

What is the purpose of this Code of Practice?

According to the Equality Commission the purpose of this Code of Practice is:

  • to give practical guidance on how to provide an inclusive service and accessible education to disabled people within the further and higher education sector.
  • to describe the duties on the bodies responsible for the provision of education and other related services within the further and higher education sector.
  • to outline the rights of disabled people within the further and higher education sector.
  • to inform disabled people as how to challenge discrimination within the further and higher education sector.

The Code of Practice will not give practical guidance on how to avoid discrimination against disabled people in respect to General Qualification Bodies. However if you would like more information on the duties of the General Qualification bodies, please contact the Equality Commisssion  on 02890 500 600 or by email at information@equalityni.org

What are we doing?

Skill NI  facilitated a number of focus group meetings on behalf of the Equality Commission to discuss every aspect of the proposed Codes of Practice for the Further and Higher Education sector in Northern Ireland.

The meetings included Disability Officers, Equality Officers and Student Services staff from Queens University, the University of Ulster and the Open University in Ireland. We also arranged focus groups with Learning Support Coordinators and other representatives from across the Further Education sector.

Focus groups were also ran for students and for student asdvocates. The focus groups were very successful and the Equality Commission will soon publish the findings of the focus groups and the consultation.

Skill NI is working closely with the Equality Commission to produce guidance material to accompany the SENDO legislation. Further details will follow soon.
